Finding schools for your autistic child is not as easy as it sounds. There are some schools that makes claim of being the best school for special needs children, but they really are not. They either lack the training or the experience. You can become your child’s advocate when it comes to him or her receiving the best education possible despite of their learning impairment.
You can always join a group of parents who have formed a committee to support other parents of autistic children. This group usually has up to date information on services and resources that are available to your child. The yellow page is also a great place to look for schools that accept and teach autistic kids. In many communities both public and private schools offer classes to children that exhibit these traits. Find out about the student teacher ratio. A large classroom with a small group of children is a plus. This means that your child will receive quite a bit of one on one attention.
Searching the internet is another sure way of finding schools for your autistic child. You can conduct your research online. You can research special programs and services that local schools may have in place for your child. You have the opportunity to gather facts, ask questions, and enroll your child in the program that you feel comfortable with.
Visit several schools you are serious about. Look at the classrooms, talk to the teachers and other staff members and listen for their views and beliefs special need children. Ask to look at some of the classrooms and some of the teaching materials that are used in the classroom. You can also ask for a brochure or some other information that you can take home and look over in your leisure time.
